When to use hydrogel pads
Although new mothers often hear that breastfeeding should not hurt, your nipples may need a little time to adjust to the frequency and duration of breastfeeding.Along with hormonal changes in the first few days after giving birth, this can cause your nipples to feel sensitive and sore. In such cases, hydrogel pads can help by providing immediate relief and soothing pain. They also prevent the nipples from rubbing against clothing and support the healing process if the skin has been damaged.
Caring for cracked nipples
Please remember that sensitive or cracked nipples may be a sign of an incorrect latch during feeding, so it is worth consulting a breastfeeding consultant or specialist. If you notice bleeding or a burning sensation in your nipples while feeding, or if healing is slow, it is best to consult a breastfeeding consultant or doctor, as this may indicate mastitis or another condition requiring treatment.
How do hydrogel nipple pads work?
Medela hydrogel pads are made with a special formula that adheres to the skin, creating a protective cooling layer that promotes healing. They are large enough to cover the entire nipple and areola (the darker skin around the nipple), as soreness can affect the whole area.
To insert the breast pad, follow these steps.

  • Wash your hands, open the pack and remove the hydrogel pad from the plastic cover.
  • Carefully place the hydrogel side of the pad directly over your nipple.
  • Before feeding your baby, remove the pad and place it on a clean surface.
  • Then gently rinse your breast with warm water and dry it with a towel before feeding.
  • After each feed, reapply the hydrogel pad with clean hands.

Are hydrogel pads reusable?
Yes, you can reuse the same hydrogel pad several times over a 24-hour period. Simply store it in a cool, clean and dry place between uses – there is no need to clean it with soap or any other detergent. You can also store the pads in the fridge to enhance the cooling effect. However, keep them out of reach of children. If the nipple shield becomes dull or cloudy (which rarely happens), discard it and use a new pad.
Pack contents
Medela hydrogel pads are sold in packs containing four individually wrapped pads.
