Description
The Doidy Cup is an open-cup training cup with a unique slanted design that helps babies during weaning. With two handles, it is scientifically designed to teach babies to drink from the rim of an open cup, not from a spout or bottle. The slant lets babies see the liquid level and encourages a more natural up-and-down movement of the hands and arms. It also teaches them to drink from an open cup and put it down correctly.
Benefits and features
- Recommended from 3 months; healthcare professionals and leading health organisations recommend introducing an open cup from around 6 months and stopping bottle use completely after 12 months.
- Designed and made in the UK from pure, food-safe HD polyethylene (HDPE). The cup complies with the EN14350 standard and is BPA-, phthalate- and PVC-free.
- 200 ml capacity; hygienic, steriliser-safe, dishwasher-safe (top rack), microwave-safe and freezer-safe.
- Available in 11 colours, including durable, pearlescent and glitter finishes. Doidy Cups are fully recyclable.
Open-cup training and development
Tried and trusted for baby weaning and open-cup training, the Doidy Cup has been helping children learn to drink from an open cup for almost 70 years. Developed in 1950, its distinctive design helps children see the liquid level and learn hand-eye coordination from an early age. The two-handled cup has a unique slope that helps teach babies to drink from an open cup rather than a teat or feeding bottle.
Healthcare professionals, governments*, and leading health organisations, such as the British Dietetic Association*, actively recommend using an open cup from around 6 months of age and stopping bottle use completely after 12 months. Compared with other drinking vessels, open cups also offer several important health benefits. Small babies, from around 3 months, can drink easily from the two-handled Doidy Cup because:
- The contents are clearly visible while drinking.
- The angled design allows a more natural up-and-down movement of the hands and forearms, unlike bottles and cups that require moving the head back and forth.
- It teaches children to drink from an open cup and put it down correctly.
- Children are less likely to overeat.
These advantages enable mothers to move from the breast to an open cup in one step, instead of introducing a dummy or spout.
A natural progression from breastfeeding
Drinking from the Doidy Cup is a natural progression from breastfeeding, as it uses the same sucking action. Drinking from the cup encourages good mouth movements and helps develop chewing skills by using the jaw, tongue and mouth muscles. It also helps improve hand-eye coordination, while supporting children as they learn to drink from an open cup.
Trusted by families and professionals
For almost 70 years, the Doidy Cup has helped children learn to drink from an open cup. Doidy Cups are sold by the National Childbirth Trust (NCT). Healthcare professionals, including health visitors, dietitians, dentists and speech therapists, recommend the Doidy Cup to make weaning easier and help prevent long-term health problems caused by delayed weaning from a bottle.
Made in the United Kingdom from pure food-safe HDPE, the Doidy Cup does not contain bisphenol, phthalates or PVC and complies with EN 14350 regulations. For everyday care, it is hygienic, steriliser-safe, dishwasher-safe on the top rack, microwave-safe and freezer-safe. The 200 ml cup is available in 11 colours, including durable, pearlescent and glitter finishes, and is fully recyclable.
